10 Steps to Fur Care
One of the wonderful things about fur is that it can last the better part of a lifetime. Fur is the most perfect and luxurious material that nature has provided us with, and it has to be treated with love and respect. Below you will find 10 steps to ensure your fur a long and beautiful life.
-
Step 1:
When a fur coat is not in use for longer periods of time - such as during summertime - it is preferable to store the fur with a furrier. He or she will have temperature, humidity and light-controlled storage facilities. If it is for some reason not possible to store the fur coat with a furrier, try to keep it in as cold and dark a place as possible. -
Step 2:
A fur coat must be cleaned annually by a fur specialist - NOT a dry cleaner. Dirt and pollutants will be removed during the cleaning process, and the leather side will be revitalised by having the necessary oils added. -
Step 3:
Never attempt to mothproof a fur coat without the necessary professional skills. No kind of home treatment can work as a substitute for professional cleaning. -
Step 4:
If storing a fur coat at home, avoid leaving it hanging in direct sunlight or in a brightly lit area, as the light can cause the fur to oxidise or change colour. -
Step 5:
Never hang a fur coat on a wire hanger. Instead, you must use a broad-shouldered hanger. Furthermore, you must always make sure that the fur coat has enough space in the wardrobe so it will not be crushed. -
Step 6:
Store fur coats in cloth garment bags while travelling. Never use plastic bags or rubber-lined bags, as these will prevent air from circulating and the fur from breathing. -
Step 7:
Always have small rips or tears repaired by a furrier immediately to prevent more expensive repairs later. -
Step 8:
If a fur coat gets wet, shake it and hang it to dry in a well-ventilated room. Never place it close to hot places such as a radiator, as these will dry out the fur and leather. After the fur coat is dry, shake it again. If the fur coat is soaked, take it to a furrier to make sure that it gets proper treatment. -
Step 9:
Never comb or brush fur coats. -
Step 10:
Avoid spraying any kind of chemical onto fur coats. This includes perfume and hairspray.
